Back-story of this artwork
Painted En Plein Air in Santa Teresa, Costa Rica
This piece is a self-portrait of my emotional journey taken in Costa Rica winter 2017. I had never traveled to CR and arrived solo with no solid plans of where I was going and no particular area to live. With painting supplies and a small dog in tote, I ended up in the hills of a town on the North West Nicoya Peninsula. I painted outdoors surrounded by a jungle backyard full of monkeys, butterflies, scorpions and spiders, and several mammals that I have never witnessed before. I was shedding 'my city self' and tuning in to my rawest emotions and what it is to truly live a life of passion and exploration. To peel off layers and become your true authentic self. This painting Monkey Behind My Back is the first of a series of 12 painted in Costa Rica, and is a true expression of what I felt at that moment in time - fragile, lost and open to finding a new way of being.
